Had a great run today! Mostly trails, about 7 miles, the longest run for me in quite some time. It's hard to believe that only a few months ago, I had all but given up on running due to a nagging issue with plantar fasciitis. It seemed that any previous attempt to get back to a decent running distance was always met with increasing pain in my right foot. Not sure what ultimately 'cured' this and allowed me to run, but I think it was a combination of:
- PT - Massage and exercises to correct my right foot which pointed out slightly while I ran. I never knew that! I owe a lot to my physical therapist who spotted this on a treadmill!
- New shoes. I ditched the Hoka's with a low heel lift and went back to a shoe I had some success with a few years ago, the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 21
- Wearing my Brooks GTS all the time for support, no more sandals and no more walking around barefoot
- Using a night splint every night until I was pain-free in the mornings
The timing of getting this fixed could not have been better. I was just starting to ramp up my running at the time of my prostate cancer diagnosis in December of 2020.
Running has always been my favorite fitness activity. Now I had a pretty complete fitness regimen focused around running, biking (road, mountain and indoor-Zwift, and weight-lifting). I honestly think all of this has been helping with my ability to tolerate ADT therapy. Fingers crossed that I can keep my running and other fitness activities up and that they continue to help me tolerate therapy until surgery.
